Is planning a regular rotation of new tyres over their lifespan a good or bad plan? From many posts I've seen here and elsewhere on the web, motorists in the USA seem to see rotating tires as a task which ought to be undertaken at regular intervals. By rotating tires, I mean moving their position on the vehicle, so moving them from the front to rear axle for example. In the UK, we seldom do this. Indeed one of the biggest tyre fitters in the country actually advises against the practice (see link here ) I've just fitted a set of four tyres to our 2012 VW Golf and wondered if it is worth rotati

Some petrol engines have siamesed bores which can cause overheating problems on land. The gen 1 cast iron small block 400 cid chevy motor is a well known example. Often engine rebuilders prefer making 383 cid with 350 non siamesed bore and 400 crank. Sure the 383 has a good reputation unlike the controversial 400. My question is would siamesed bores be good for marine where lots of cold water is available.

I'm installing an oil cooler on to a MK1 MX-5, that is used for Trackdays and weekly road use. I'm planning to install it where the AC condenser used to live, using two horizontal aluminium square tubes where the oil cooler will be bolted on. Do I need to seal it's back against the radiator or leaving it free will have better performance? It would be sitting a bit on the side to shield it a bit from direct hit of potential debris. How concerned should I be? Finally, I keep seeing posts about vibrations that can damage these coolers. The kit I bought comes with some thick o-rings that suppose t

I have the feeling this has been done to death, given this model's reputation for cooling issues. This is my son's car and I have been working on it. In the winter, he can drive it normally and without issue. Spring and Fall have been mostly alright. When it's hot, it will be ok for a while, but stop and go causes it to overheat. So does highway driving after a good while. So far we have: -Replaced the radiator -Replaced the thermostat -Replaced the fan sensor -Replaced the coolant temp sensor -Replaced the water pump -The fan will run when jumpering the relay socket. -I bench tested the fan r

I've taken my car to 3 different A/C shops and they were all unable to diagnose the problem. It's a BMW 1-series F20 LCI B47. Compressor is a magnetic clutch type Denso 6SAS14A. Symptoms: The AC compressor goes into "reduced mode" at higher-than-idle RPM. Once the RPM is dropped back to idle the AC restarts. If the RPM is returned from the "High Zone" to "Working Zone" the AC still doesn't restart, only when it returns to "Idle Zone". The actual RPM limit of the "Working Zone" depends on outside temperature. If ambient temperature is 20C it wor

I have a 2003 Chrysler GT, PT Cruiser with less then 60000 miles. It is a four cylinder 2.4L, that is turbo charged, and is automatic. I had a hole in the over flow tank and had it replaced with a new one. When I got it back from my mechanic it seemed ok. About a week later I took the radiator cap off and found a light brown milky substance in the radiator. No water in the engine oil. The temperature gauge never showed that the car ever got hot. It did however spray water all over the engine from the broken over flow tank. When I took it to the mechanic approx. 4 miles away. Any idea were the

Working on an overheating issue on my 2008 Mustang GT. Car starts normally after sitting all night and fan starts up when I click on the AC. Let the car run (or drive it in traffic) and as soon as the needle gets to normal the fan shuts down. this of course causes the radiator to start heating up shutting down my AC before going in the RED. I immediately turn on the heater with fans on high and temp starts retreat towards normal. 3 fans later it is doing the same thing. Took it to the local mechanic and the computer says all systems are green and all circuits are good. Hoping someone who has s

Most recently I have noticed my temperature gauge rising and im hearing bubbling in the overflow jug. I opened the hood and took off the radiator cap and all the fluid was it drained from the radiator but then it started filling back up. I am wondering if it is my head gasket or my water pump. I drove it this morning to work and when I got to work I opened the hood and the radiator was warm to the touch but there was no fluid on the ground. the overflow was about 1/2 full. so can you tell him if it is the water pump or the head gasket. It is not blowing smoke. I do let it warm up before taking

Hi I have a 2000 Honda Civic. There seems to be a lot of rust in the coolant. I just got it back from the mechanic who repaired a failed water pump. Any suggestions on what to do to fix this? Thanks.

I have no coolant in my vehicle. It's getting cold tonight-20 degrees. Can I leave the vehicle parked, then just add coolant when the weather warms up again? The coolant all leaked out, I don't need to use the vehicle for a few days. Thanks!

I have a garden tool (roto tiller) with a 196cc engine. The engine is cooled using forced air, it is a 4 stroke engine. The engine has not been used for more than 2-3 hours so far. I have tried to use the engine again today and I have faced some weird behavior. I am starting the engine, that works perfectly well. I start working with the engine and it does its job, however some 20-30 seconds later the engine just stops. When the engine stops before that it can be clearly heard that something is grinding, i.e. is not OK. Same thing happened again today. The engine was running at moderate RPM fo

My mechanic replaced my radiator hoses. 2 weeks later, one came loose and the engine overheated and died. It was put back on and 2 weeks after that, the hose began to leak. I brought it back and both hoses were replaced, said to be faulty. An external compression test was performed but not internal compression test. What does that mean and should I take the car to another mechanic for further testing or monitor the car for a while first? It seems to rev higher upon acceleration, to 3RPMs but I have not had the car back for more than a day.

When purchasing a radiator, one spec that is provided is the number of rows in the core. I have a few closely related questions regarding these rows that are perhaps best to combine into this single post: First, exactly what defines a "row" within a radiator core? Second, what are the advantages/disadvantages of more rows in a radiator core? Third, is there any way to tell, from the outside, the number of rows in a radiator core? Example of a Jeep radiator advertised as "1 row": Example of a Jeep radiator advertised as "2 rows": Example of a Jeep radiator advertis

For example, it seems switching from some high wattage headlights to much lower wattage LED's frees up more of the alternator's power capacity. But, does this mean the alternator (or other electrical components like the voltage regulator) will start to run hotter? (to dissipate excess power via heat?) Or, does the decrease in overall electrical load simply get handled by just easing up the load on the engine making it easier to spin the alternator in the first place?

I am thinking of buying a performance air filter for my 2001 SEAT Ibiza (6K2). The reason I'm considering this is because my stock filter needs replacing and I figured I might as well do it right the first time. Now since the stock filter sits on top of the engine I need a new place to stick my performance filter. There are some pictures on the Internet of people having performance air filters, but none seem to explain why they placed it in the place that they did. What are the criteria I should keep in mind when picking a location for my filter? Obviously, you don't want it near the exhaust p

After reading some articles regarding 'running low on oil', I understood the logic that having more (appropriate amount) of oil is better than running low as oil has time to cool down before it has to be 'used' again to cool/lubricate and what not. So my question actually is; how does it get cooled? I don't think it goes through the radiator. Does the oil just 'sit' and cools off by time? If that's the case; wouldn't driving for a long time (let's say 8 hours) cause it to only get hotter and hotter? My car stays at 90-91 degrees Celsius (Audi A6) and won't go over unless it's really a hot day

I was reading online and found a few people saying you should never add concentrated anti-freeze to a cooling system. you should only dilute what you already have in there with water and only add anti-freeze when doing a flush, is this correct?

I own a MK 1 Citi Golf Sport 1.6 Carb that has 523220 km. I recently flushed the cooling system and changed the coolant. After the flush the temperature showed above normal despite changing everything. I also replaced the thyristor and still the temperature gauge reads above normal 50%. The fan kicks in as normal and the car is not overheating. I have had a dry and wet pressure test done, compression good. There is no mixing of water and oil. I have changed the water pump, checked fuses, checked the instrument cluster and electrics, and all circuitry is good. I have done this so many times bef

I have an overheating problem and I've found that my #1 fan that should be coming on at or about 195 degrees isn't coming on. I've checked the fan motor, it's good, I've checked the fuse and relay and they are good. The #2 fan comes on with the air conditioner just like it should. I did find that there isn't any power to the # 30 pin on the relay. Are the #1 and #2 fans controlled through the same temperature sensor? I've replaced the temperature sensor also. Any one have an idea what might be the problem?

I have a 98 Honda Accord. I replace the radiator and cooling fan, now they come on as soon the ignition is turned on and 30 seconds later the heat gauge goes to high.I am wondering if I have a grounding problem.
