In short, yes.  The width is the main issue, as roads/parking spaces/garages haven't got any wider in the last 50 years but cars have exponentially.  I have two "small" modern cars and even those are a tight fit in most parking spaces.  How you park a modern Range Rover/S-Class in an average parking space and actually have room to get out is beyond me!The problem is that this hasn't necessarily translated to more passenger space.  We have a 2015 Renault Clio and I wouldn't really say that it has any more passenger/boot space than a mk1 Clio or the Peugeot 205 that I owned but externally it is

And are there really vast numbers of big SUVs?Not sure if we're making the same point but we have both a 2015 Clio and a 2015 Captur and the Captur is noticeably roomier/bigger boot. I would also say that something like a Honda CRV is a lot roomier than a Civic but as they get physically bigger, there is a low of diminishing returns at work. Had a mk7 Golf Estate and the Tiguan didn't really offer more space and every 3 row SUV that I have been in has been compromised in terms of interior/luggage space compared to the equivalently sized people carrier.
