16v was a real performance car. I don’t know how they sold so many 8v cars, when back in the mid 80’s you could get a Fiat Strada 130 TC Abarth or Lancia Delta 1.6 HF Turbo for similar money.

My mum had a metallic black 16v 3d H plate with PAS at the same time I had my first 8v that was a lovely car.I think it was more throttle response coupled with the fact the top end rush felt so good, made the bottom end feel comparatively lethargic, the 8 valve did feel more responsive to the throttle which made its feel torquier even though it wasn t, it had slightly more but a lot higher in the rev range.I read something about air velocity ages ago, smaller intake, less valves, sort of less time to fill it s lungs , couple that with most of the time you aren t that high in the rev range in normal driving the 8 valve pulled off a convincing trick of feeling like it was punchier low down, it wasn t. The gearing was different as well, the 16 valve has shorter ratios which furthered the illusion as you could hang onto the gear longer.I think a lot of folk took it as more valves = better, and to an extent that was true but you did lose some of what was good about the eight valve, it was mostly a win/win, but not wholly. The 8v had 28-30mm intake port diameters optimised for mid range torque (3000-4000rpm), while the 16v had 50mm ports optimised for higher rpm breathing and top end power. VW subsequently reduced the 16v ports to 42mm in 1992 to promote better throttle response at lower rpm. By comparison, Peugeot chose 31mm/41mm for their 8v/16v 1.9 XU9 engines, although it's worth saying Peugeot exclusively used EFI, while VW used K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injecton for all 16v and 8v until 1987, before switching to Digifant EFI (as seen in this article). It's probably safe to say that VW engineers were initially too ambitious with the headline power figure for the 16v,

Synchro, 1.8L 16v G-Ladder supercharged making 210bhp and 186lb ft, BBS RM012's, ABS brakes, single headlights, and a tiny little motorsport badge as VW Motorsport put them together. I believe all were 4 door and that the 2nd batch, within the total of 71 cars, where upped to 240bhp. Edited by alexpa on Saturday 19th September 16:26

The 8v engine was a very nice all round engine for torque and smoothness and the car felt a bit more solid compared to other hot hatches of the time. Wouldnt have bothered with a 16v, if I d have wanted more power the red top 2.0 16v Astra was a better engine. I felt you sat a little high in the golf though, more on it than in it.Didnt realise that they were available on an A plate ! Hens teeth i would imagine now ? Just remembered that in 87 we replaced my Mums stolen immaculate Y plat

This looks fantastic. I think it's got to a point you'd have to be daft to buy the G90 M5 over this or a top end Taycan. Either pure combustion or pure electric, the PHEVs are just a pointless, overcomplicated middle option

Still as subtle as a brick in your face. Not for me.

Other than a slightly bulky rear end, I think that looks fantastic. 9/10. And it's a saloon, not another bloody SUV - hurrah!
