I took my 2006 Toyota Camry with 4-cylinder engine in for a state-mandated safety inspection and the mechanic failed the vehicle claiming that "the steering rack is completely broken" and quoted $2500 to replace the rack, and the fluid and do an alignment. Since I had just driven the car for two hours, I was deeply skeptical about "completely broken" so put it up on the lift in my garage and it appears to me to be nothing more than a torn boot on the passenger side and some fairly minor leakage, which is to be expected on a vehicle with 205,000 miles on it. Since you have to take it all apart to replace the bellows (yes, you can buy those by themselves), take the inner tie rod end and completely clean it. Get rid of all grease/whatever you find. Since the bellows have been split (looks like it's been a while), it'll have some amount of crud/grime/grit in there with the grease. Get rid of all of it. I'm assuming it is easiest to remove the tie rod ends on the side (assuming it is one side) with the torn bellows. I'd suggest you do that over removing everything together (ie: removing the rack & pinion). If you can, keep the entire length of the tie rod (both inner and outer) together. That way you Shouldn't have to have it re-aligned when you put it all together. If you do have to take the inner apart from the outer tie rod, make sure to count turns so you can get it back to the right length. Once cleaned, manipulate the rod end to see how it feels. If there is ANY slop (sideways or in/out), replace it. If it feels like it is really eas

Hello! I have not driven my car for a month and now have this noise. It is a 2016 V Jetta and normally in great shape. The noise is in the background and sounds like something soft is rubbing against something. It picks up at 10 mi/hr or so and then stays on…Thank you! https://global.discourse-cdn.com/cartalk/original/3X/3/f/3f6ae6628ea80cf8d6b1899d0b2392d868545516.mp3

Power seat - Whenever vehicle is started or shut off and the seat slides forward of back, the power seat makes an annoying, obnoxious noise… I thought something was stuck in the track but now I think it’s the motor going out. Guy at the local dealership said it just needed grease. He appears to be incorrect. Any thoughts? Thoughts?

A buddy and I were trying to replace his right front wheel hub, on his 2008 Chevy Impala LTZ. He described the engine size as 3900, I would think that means 3.9 liter, although I didn’t know there is a 3.9, I only know of the 3.8 liter and 3,1 Liter. One of the mounting bolts is so tight that the socket would not keep a grip on the bolt head, no matter how hard we tried to force the socket onto the bolt head. We had tapped on it as best we could with a hammer and metal rod, we heated the area with a torch, no luck. Of course, very little access to this bolt head, so impossible to use an impact
