Corrado for me too...the first time I saw one in the showroom that was it, sadly I couldn't afford one they were more expensive than a Golf GTi 16v. A few years later they had just went out of production and I went looking for one...a year later I found exactly the car I wanted at a VAG main dealer, Corrado 16v, red, low miles...checking it over I discovered it was accident damaged, I was gutted.I never owned one...but I did promise myself if ever VW made another coupe I'd buy one, so I got a new Scirocco.

If we're including bikes, I ended up with something I really thought I wanted, but instead of giving any organs for it, it pretty much attempted to relieve me of them afterwards.I'd had it a week when it displayed a tendency to want to provide me with the entertainment of 130mph tankslappers. This obviously focusses the attention somewhat, but clearly several months of near death experiences wasn't enough for me, and it eventually got itself into such a tizz in a straight line on a bumpy country road that it spat me off and threw itself so conclusively into the scenery that I couldn't initially find what was left of it.It was absolutely wrecked, and so was I, a year off work and a lifetime supply of medication followed that. Things you wish you had never owned!Think maybe the 130 mph aspect was part of the problem here Think regretting the bike purchase would be transcended for me by the still being alive and not being in a wheelchair one ! As ridiculous as it sounds, at the tender age of 22, I got used to this level of nonsense it delivered pretty quickly, and it became a bit of a ritual that I just came to accept as part of the 16'' front wheel effect that was all the rage at the time. There used to be a specific part of the A1 that I used almost daily, and it was always the same place and circumstances that triggered it. When it had done it a few times, I just figured that as long as I didn't throttle off, it would be fine. Like towing a caravan.Unfortunately, the same science didn't happen to work in my favour on the road that eventually did for me. I dodged the wheelchair, but the broken neck and blocked carotid artery left a fairly lasting impression!

I must say what a reliable car this has been. No major issued over the years, OK, the door locks have gone, common problem, but for leaving here there and anywhere, chucking the dogs in or a trip to the dump, what a reliable well engineered piece of kit. For what it costs to run etc, OK, front wing tops are rusty.... But Id rather use this than someone ding my door on my Bentley! Edited by Trusty Steed on Friday 9
I've always wanted to drive one of these, looks cracking.

I am a self confessed VW fan boy, with a Mk2 & Mk6 in the current fleet, albeit non-GTIs. My Mk6 Estate is a Mk5 in new clothes, and it is near immortal with 190k on the clock & no end in sight. That said, a cheap Mk5 GTI should be approached with extreme caution. There are hundreds on FB marketplace, both in running and being broken guises. It's a car that in general comes across as a rapidly disappearing model. This is a good thing, as in 5 years, there will only be true solid survivors left. I suspect this week's shed won't be amongst them.Edited by BFleming on Friday 9th October 08:18

Back in the day the Group B car didn't have one, but following a near fatal crash (Ari Vatanen) at the 1985 Rally Argentina, a whale-tail was fitted to allow the car to land on its wheels after getting airborne , mad times.ah, never thought about it that way. makes sense that its also handy for that

Winter 1993. On my way to the office, I'm slightly distracted by changing the music or something and I don't notice the rush hour traffic has come to a halt - I brake hard but manage to hit the Fiesta. The driver in the 7 series in front of the Fiesta hears the impact and instantly stands on the brake but inadvertently floors the throttle and careers over the road, hits the opposite fence, spins around, hits the fence on this side, then comes to a halt. His car was less than a month old.....I manage to get away with 3 points for driving without due car and a big old slice of humble pie. Ca
