I am a self confessed VW fan boy, with a Mk2 & Mk6 in the current fleet, albeit non-GTIs. My Mk6 Estate is a Mk5 in new clothes, and it is near immortal with 190k on the clock & no end in sight. That said, a cheap Mk5 GTI should be approached with extreme caution. There are hundreds on FB marketplace, both in running and being broken guises. It's a car that in general comes across as a rapidly disappearing model. This is a good thing, as in 5 years, there will only be true solid survivors left. I suspect this week's shed won't be amongst them.Edited by BFleming on Friday 9th October 08:18
In 2017 I purchased a Tornado Red 5 door GTi. It was a manual, with highline dash, 17 inch wheels (they drove so much nicer on the 17s, rather than the optional 18s), heated cloth (which i preferred over the leather), Xenon lights, auto lights and wipers, and a few other bits. I drove that car exactly as VW intended; it did the school run, holidays, long road trips, track days, to the shops and everything in between. I bought it on 88,000 miles and sold it on 145,000 miles - in that time it needed little more than regular servicing. I ran it on Goodyear Eagle F1's which gave it far more grip than it had any right to have, lasted 20,000 miles between sets, and averaged 35 mpg over that time. It would get over 40mpg if you drive carefully. It was one of the very best cars I ever owned and I still have a tinge of regret today for selling it.I also worked for VW for 13 years throughout the Mk3/4/5/6/7 Golf era, and was fortunate enough to drive many Gti's, from new examples through to 200,000 mile customer cars.Utterly brilliant things.

원문 보기 ↗Bought a 1.6Tsi version of this for my son to learn to drive in around 8 years ago. He passed and had it as his daily for a few years, then upgraded, I now have this as my dump car. I must say what a reliable car this has been. No major issued over the years, OK, the door locks have gone, common problem, but for leaving here there and anywhere, chucking the dogs in or a trip to the dump, what a reliable well engineered piece of kit. For what it costs to run etc, OK, front wing tops are rusty.... But Id rather use this than someone ding my door on my Bentley! Edited by Trusty Steed on Friday 9
I've always wanted to drive one of these, looks cracking.

Bobby Lee said: They may have benchmarked the handling of the Focus but I can tell you they didn t get ANYWHERE NEAR. Might be less likely to fall apart though.Eh, Focuses from this era are almost indestructible? The Golfs are decent, but rot like mad and have a lot more small quality issues...

A few years ago I saw Porsche 992 racers on 18", which looked ridiculous. So I asked why?Because they drive so much better on 18" sir.OK, I'll have a JAS Tensei NSX on 18" please...
