The hideous 75 was the last straw. I remember a colleague regretting buying a metallic black 75 Estate in the Connoisseur specification. The thing looked like a hearse and the poor guy was shocked at trade in time when it was 2 years old. The 800 was a genuinely poor car, I owned loads because they cost as much as a good weekend bender, and by the end ('96 facelift on) it was finally sorted out to the point it could have been considered pretty decent for a mid 80s car and that's about the kindest thing I can find to say about them. The 800 coupe was a looker, and better finished in parts than the others, but they were still mechanically fragile and pretty much wked out by 100-120k miles like the 1980s car they were.Saddest thing about the 75 is that it was was a really good car but styling it to only appeal to pensioners was the final nail in the Rover coffin, although I think the 999 nails already holding the lid shut had probably done the work by then. Rover being Rover as soon as they got control of their own destiny back they comprehensively ruined the only good car they'd had to sell in 25 years by utterly ripping the arse out of them with "Project Drive", a fitting end to 30 years of (poorly) managed decline of the domestic mainstream auto industy really.All in all a sad story, none of which makes a 600 any more interesting than a contemporary Accord unless you absolutely must have caramac coloured plastics.
