Owned 4 Golfs never owned any generation GTI however I've owned 4 GT TDi's & GTD. From probably my favourite & only brand new car I've ever bought a 51 plate Mk4 GT TDi 150.After 5 faultless years & over 70,000 traded it in for a 12,000 miles 04 GT TDi 130 again faultless other than not the cars fault passenger side been keyed, after about 3 years traded it in for what I think was definitely the worst & certainly only car with problems.Mk5 2.0 GT TDi 140 build quality just didn't seem as good then their was ABS problems Turbo replacement, thermostat & Water pump then something suspension related every MOT.Car was only about 4 years old when I bought it, I put up with it for about 3 years. And like all MK5S I had the usual bubbling behind the paint when wheel arches start to rust by the time I got rid at about 8 years old.Bought a 56 plate Skoda Fabia VRS for a few years obviously no problem with an old friend a VAG PD 130.Then my last a Mk7 13 plate GTD which was a brilliant car bought it at 3 years old unfortunately it was stolen & written off in Lockdown but the coppers did catch the scumbags, still have a diesel but done with Golfs Got a 16 Audi A1.Mk5 Golf GTi fantastic cars but not Mk5 GT TDi 140s , maybe I should have had a 170 diesel lol.
