kambites said: I think most of the appeal of classic cars to me can be summed as by the fact they stink and are not very drivable; and I have to take them apart and fix them regularly. The smell of a classic is underrated, from the toxic uncatalysed (or barely catalysed) exhaust and the raw fuel at a cold start to the old canvas tent smell of the interior to the oily hot smell after a good drive Even on more modern stuff it's great, there is a V8 BMW M3 that I walk past on the way to the pub sometimes, and if it's just arrived home it always has that lovely "I leak oil but it's ok because I get really hot and burn it all off" smell going on. Lovely.I associate the smells of classics with having a good if sometimes a bit irresponsible time every bit as much as I associate the taste of booze and cigarettes when you kiss a woman with having a good if often a bit irresponsible time Edited by GeniusOfLove on Wednesday 26th August 12:00

I was thinking about this the other day, as a work colleague was telling me about his friend who was transplanting a BMW M57 diesel engine (the 3 litre straight six diesel) and the ZF 8-speed auto into a classic Defender.  Now objectively this makes it a better car (faster, more efficient, more usable etc) and this is essentially what Ineos did to make the Grenadier but does it retain the character/feel of a classic Defender?  I would argue no.  If I were getting a classic Defender, I would probably seek out a Td5 as I thought it was the best engine they put in it from factory and maybe get a
