I joined Bentley as a contractor through my own consultancy to develop the rear lighting for the Torcal in December 2023.There was no rear design, the previous more traditional Bentley front and rear ends were binned off by the new exterior design director (ex skoda/audi) guy called Domen. Really good guy. He's gone to Porsche now.By Jan 24 a shape for the rear end and lights outline were surfaced and it looked great but the front end was going badly and the multiple redesigns ran out of time and a best compromise to make the new headlights work with the illuminated grille were a big technical

They had to redesign the headlights again, this time in less than 2 months. It was fascinating to be a part of the weekly surface reviews and watch the design progress, the cadence and sheer number of people and resources involved. Chefs kitchen and broth comes to mind.By March 24 design had a theme for the rear light signature to use 3D illuminated diamonds following the grille lit diamond theme but in 25mm strip! The entire rear light is less than 70mm high. To do anything other than a light bar seemed impossible but I had an idea and started working on it.Early in the development the lighting engineering team and supplier both didnt believe it would work so I had it simulated. It looked great and VAGs head of R+D loved it but the eng and supplier teams still didnt believe it would work and thought another way would work better and be easier to deliver. It didn t. The original simulations I had done look pretty much identical to the press shots of the car.By October 24 I'd invented and proved out with a scale working model a totally new and unique LED light guide that turned a strip of LEDs into an evenly illuminated but distinctly separate array of 3D diamonds exactly as the studio wanted and in the space envelope. The previous design that was not chosen had taken 18 months of development so I received some resentment
