Hi everyone! Happy to join the community. I'm thinking about buying a fun weekend car soon. What do you personally prefer for pure driving enjoyment on weekends, manual or automatic? Looking forward to your opinions!

Personally, I'd say manual.I've bought a few cars over the years with both transmissions. Automatics are essentially go-karts, IMO, but ultimately every type of drivetrain and transmission can have its place.One (Starlet Glanza V) could have done with being a manual, but I got it for a steal last year and it's fun and nippy enough (totally unmodified under the bonnet), but for me something is lacking in it despite the turbo and it isn't additional horsepower!On certain gradients and twisty roads, it does feel better to be able to choose gears, make use of engine braking etc. Some may like to rev match and heel-toe but essentially, manuals feel more rewarding with more to do.That extra pedal and the choice of gears on the gear stick for the driver to decide means you get the crucial driver engagement, control, sound and satisfaction.Generally speaking, motoring as a hobby evolved around the ICE and manual gearbox, though I totally get that for some, they'd rather use just one foot, do less and let the car do the rest. Personal preference and all.With manuals on the decline generally, for some it makes sense to keep hold of one to break away from what is fast becoming the norm, even though not long ago manuals were the norm rather than the exception. Something else to factor in.
