Very little MINI related work has been carried out recently due to the Astra rear trailing bushes becoming an absolute saga spread over two weekends.I'll spare you a long and intense write up, but the long and short of it is that they were both shot, so I bought some new ones (£15 for a pair), then I bought an Astra specific bush removal tool (£60), removed the drivers side bush (with difficulty), tried to install new bush which goes 80% in and then refuses to budge to the point where it snapped the threaded rod on the bush tool. Luckily, it was in just enough to get the bracket back on and fitted to the car, albeit with severe alignment issues!New poly-chinesium bushes ordered (£55 for a pair), new part installed bush removed, poly bush greased and slid in, bracket reattached - winner!Passenger side chose violence.Yet another threaded rod snapped resulting in much drilling, fire, more drilling, more fire, some hammering, more fire, more drilling, a lot more hammering, a reciprocating saw and eventually a 14mm threaded rod and bush removal tool.Some 8 hours and more money than I wanted to spend and I now have two new trailing arm bushes fitted, I am also awaiting a refund on the bush tool as it was just not fit for purpose.Hopefully that is the end of the Astra related content for a while, back on to the MINI. As I said, not a great deal has been happening, I have however managed to clean up and paint both the engine block and crankshaft girdle with some VHT paint, they both look a lot better for it.I went with black, which was the original factory colour, presumably because it hides the oil leaks that MINIs suffer from! I have also stripped off the waterpump and intercooler horn from the supercharger and inspected the rotors. Thankfully, they all look good with no major marks or flaking of the teflon coating.
