The sloppy and laggy power delivery, the tiny power band, and more importantly the constant grumbling and vibration when it's not outright clattering and rattling all hugely let the side down in something that's not a utilitarian box where all that matters is durability and economy. The rest of the car was so good in every way that such a prosaic engine stood out all the more. I think convincing European buyers that a 4 cylinder diesel was a remotely acceptable engine for an expensive car was a great swizz, I wonder if the realisation of just how ordinary they could make their "premium" cars before their customers noticed of cared is one of the root causes of what dross so many supposedly higher end cars are today.Edited by GeniusOfLove on Thursday 13th August 15:32 I bought one less than a year after they were launched in the 1 Series, but mine was a 123d so it had two-turbos which definitely did away with any lag even if it didn't sound very pleasant idling. By the time I started reading about cam-chain issues I had no need of a diesel as I was no longer using it for business mileage so I sold it on 81K miles and began my serial N/A striahgt 6 petrol BMW ownership. I really should have just ignored the HMRC business mileage rates and bought a 130i. Last month my Indy gave me an Automatic Cooper SD Countryman he had bought cheap on just over 90k miles because it had a catastrophic engine failure so he fitted a replacement. I hated it, gutless and looking at the OBC not exactly economical at 41mpg - I only checked because he likes them returned with the same sort of range as when collected.I hated it
