Apparently they have to be repeated every x meters, even if the speed limit changes immediately after they still put the repeater in. Had this pointed out to me on a farcebook post yonks ago and I now see it all the time!There's one down the road from me on the b6117, which is mostly 50mph. Repeaters every 400 meters or so and the last 50 roundel is then followed by a 30mph sign less than 10 meters later!I mean what is the actual frikkin point?Once you see one, you'll see loads and it just irritates the hell out of me.What makes this one even more bizarre is that there is no legal requirement to have them. I thought there was outside of 30mph zones that have lamposts, the lamposts being the 'repeater. But there is not.No legal requirement to have what? Happy to shed some light on it. Highways engineer, this is my bread and butter. If it's the repeater immediately before the speed limit change, it's so that police can enforce the limit should people try and get a head start and increase the speed before the upper limit gets in. If there is a lower speed limit repeater immediately before the change, then you can't argue that you got confused. Same reason there is almost always a speed limit repeater in the frame of a speed camera snap. So no, not legally required, but a good legal defence. Not really sure why you'd have a HIGHER repeater immedately before a lower speed limit though. And there is no legal requirement for repeaters ouside of 30mph limits, and for 30mph repeaters outside of a system of streetlighting, it is strongly recommended - very rarely would the chief constable sign off on a speed limit, nor would it pass a (mandatory) road safety audit if there weren't any repeaters.
