I'm lucky with that, my wife's idea of a suitable car is that it moves bodies from one place to another without breaking down.

About 20 years ago my wife decided she wanted a bright red Toyota RAV 4. Automatic with leather heated seats, 5 door.It took me ages to find one, but I found one down near Barnstaple, Devon. Off we went from Cambridge, bought it and then she wanted to go and visit her family in south Wales. Off we went in convoy, and I watched in mild horror as she approached the Severn Bridge toll booths at a tad over 60 mph. Yes, it’s a 40 limit and the speeding fine came through about a week later.She loved that car, but decided to change it for a Merc ML because by then we needed to tow 2.4 tonnes of horse trailer and horses. 11 years ago she had given up riding, the ML had died a death and she needed a replacement. She decided she wanted a medium SUV, same interior spec. We test drove all sorts of cars around the £5k mark. No joy. Then out of the blue said one evening that she liked the Saab 9-5 estate we used to have, and could I find her one of those. Nothing like a medium SUV. That was March 2015. It cost £875. She now cannot bear to part with it. It’s 27 years old. It was serviced last month, new tyres fitted. The 30-something mechanic who serviced it commented with some surprise on what a lovely car it is to drive.
