증상

Andy Burnham’s congestion zone signs. We’ve still got a few left. IIRC £78 million to set it all up, chopping trees down and concreting sign posts in all over the 490 square miles it covered, then £190,000 to put the under review stickers on for a bit, then a final £600,000 to remove the signs altogether.The very definition of unnecessary.

Not sure if they are still there, but there used to be blue signs every few miles on the northern end of the M6 which just had "Highways Agency" written on them.No idea what they were for, possibly the equivalent of "Maintained by BEAR" which is on some of the Scottish trunk roads. I presume BEAR is some abbreviation for an outsourcing company name rather than there being actual bears repairing the potholes and cleaning the cats eyes.Scotland is a good source of slightly patronising (and impractical to apply immediately) suggestions on the motorway gantry signs when there is nothing else to display. I've seen "Check your eyesight" ( a good idea, but not sure about the practicality of doing an eye test right that moment whilst driving at 70mph on the M8), "Check Tyre Pressures" (again, difficult whilst driving), "Don't drink and drive" (a bit late if you're driving drunk and are already on the motorway). "Wear Seatbelts" and "Don't Drive Tired" are the only two I've seen which could have an immediate effect on people's behaviour.On the fixed signs, "Please drive safely through the village" is a bit daft - it almost implies that it's only necessary to drive safely through that village. Generally I find it good idea to drive safely during the whole journey rather than just whilst going through one particular village.
