China's industrial and technical success is, fundamentally, because it has played the long game - essentially to speed-run the entire industrial revolution that took the West 250 years in about a third of that time. In 50 years they've pushed from steel, coal and ships through cars and textiles and heavy electricals to electronics, plastics consumer goods and aeronautics and are now at the forefront. And they powered it all with huge fossil fuel energy systems, then nuclear then renewable, all in a parallel sequence so the PRC can be both the biggest fossil fuel consumer and the biggest driver of renewable energy at the same time. The West used to do similar long-term planning without being a totalitarian one-party regime. I don't think we'd seriously say that France was that, but that is how the French state built Renault from being a failed manufacturer with bombed factories owned by a Nazi collaborator to being one of the major global automotive players. Under state ownership Renault received vast amounts of funds as part of a deliberate and calculated plan. Which worked. France spent far less on turning Renault into a success than the UK spent on keeping BL around as a failure. Ironically (especially given Chinese history with literal drugs and the West) Western capitalists couldn't resist the metaphorical drug that China presented them when it liberalised - an open market full of easy, compliant and cheap labour, low-cost energy, favourable taxes.
