증상

디젤 엔진의 구형 모델들이 스로틀 플레이트 없이 작동하며, 디젤 엔진 폭주(runaway) 현상이 발생할 수 있다는 것을 알게 됨. 오일이 매니폴드에 고이면서 엔진이 제어 불능 상태로 돌아갈 수 있고, 스로틀 플레이트가 없는 구형 디젤 엔진에는 위험 요소가 있음.

처리 내용

신형 디젤 엔진에 스로틀 플레이트를 추가하는 이유: EGR(배기가스 재순환) 밸브에서 가스를 흡입하기 위해 필요한 진공을 생성하기 위함. 디젤 엔진은 본래 희박 연소로 설계되어 스로틀 플레이트가 필수 아님. 연료 분사량만으로 엔진 운전과 필요한 일을 수행함. 희박 연소의 문제점은 연소 온도가 높아진다는 것임. ~1700°F 이상이면 질소산화물(NOx) 형성 시작 → 산성비 유발 및 호흡기 손상. 스로틀 플레이트를 추가하면 EGR 프로세스를 통해 배기가스를 흡입으로 재순환시켜 연소 온도를 낮추고 NOx 생성을 억제할 수 있음. 가솔린 엔진에서는 오래전부터 사용된 방식이나, 디젤 엔진은 스로틀 플레이트 부재로 충분한 진공을 생성하지 못했음. 스로틀 플레이트 추가로 이 문제 해결 가능.
