amongst the general frivolity, BS and argumentative points scoring, occasionally discussions on PistonHeads can be fascinating and informative. Edit: I put a capital "A" at the start of that comment. I have no idea why it's been converted to lowercase.

2xChevrons said: Great reply (snipped to the TL;DR bit for brevity but I agree with every word). The lingering (and not so lingering) effects of the class system in British industry in general, not just the motor industry, in the post-war period is endlessly fascinating and reveals itself in so many ways, just as you've laid out. BMC (like so much British industry) was absolutely riven with old-boy networks, favouritism, 'clubbiness', back-scratching and back-stabbing. Far too many decisions, especially at the top level, were made on personal whims and preferences, with people being promoted on the basis of a mix of whether they were the 'right sort', whether they came from the 'right side' of the old Austin/Nuffield rivalry, whether they laughed at Leonard Lord's jokes, what label of whisky they drank and whether it was 'their turn'. Ability, achievement and merit were very far down the list. For a business of its scale and complexity the Corporation had almost no formal process to inform or make its decisions. Ford had entire armies of accountants, marketers, human resource executives, production planners, design engineers, industrial technicians etc. who drew up reports and policy documents to allow the top brass to make informed decisions, and in turn those decisions were written down, formalised and briefed.Contrast with BMC, where Leonard Lord cooked up spurious reasons to give Gerald Palmer the heave-ho so he could get Issigonis back from Alvis, who was then given a brief for a small car directly from Lord because Lord didn't like bubble cars. The Mini's dimensions were not the result of market research or ergonomic study, but something Len Lord pulled out of his hat on a whim. Then Lord personally signs off on mass production of the Mini after a quick spin in a prototype, shocking even Issigonis because the project was at such an early level. Ford of the 1950s wouldn't have been able to make the Mini - its corporate culture went against such a brave, bold,

Electric is ticking along nicely, and that won't change, but it's also nice to look back though I think. Absolutely. but that should maybe be separate thread. Or two actually.Celebration of current ICE cars perhaps? And One for the fantasists to

I've filed it firmly under 'jobs never to attempt myself!'Actually wasn't that bad.One of those jobs that took ages because I was trying to do it without taking something else off, i.e. the brake servo.Once I'd decided to remove the servo, it took 20 minutes, whereas I'd spent an hour and 20minutes trying to do it without removing the servo, although admittedly, given the current status of the car, removing the servo was much easier than it would of been had I had to drain the brake fluid and if there had been an engine in the w
