While I admire and deeply respect the 911, I have never really had an itch to buy one (although I was mildly intrigued by 997.2 cars in c.2013). They are good looking cars, but they lack the emotional pull for me that a McLaren, Aston Martin or Ferrari would. The other downside about 911s is that the spec choice of second-hand cars is incredibly dull. Only about 5% of cars are not in black/silver/grey, and the interior colour is usually black. Are the former owners all beaten-down conformists? For me, I would take a McLaren over a 911 for the same money. One is, to me, a supercar with exotic looks and explosive performance. The other is a very smartly turned out, fast, but emotionally aloof coupé. Horses for courses. Or, as CAR Magazine once stated, "Porsches for Courses".
