엔진 배기량이 1사이클당 연소되는 연료량과 어떻게 관련되는지 혼동함. 예를 들어 Ford Ka의 1.3L 배기량 엔진이 1사이클마다 1.3L의 연료를 소비한다고 잘못 생각함.
처리 내용
정상 주행 시 공연비는 14.7:1로 일정하게 유지됨. 배기량이 큰 엔진이 1사이클당 더 많은 공기(더 큰 스윕 볼륨)를 필요로 하면 그에 따라 더 많은 연료가 필요함. 결국 문제는 1사이클당 마찰이 얼마나 많은지, 그리고 자동차 무게가 얼마나 되는지임. 마찰은 FMEP(마찰평균유효압력)로 측정되며, 이는 엔진을 일정한 속도로 유지하기 위해 피스톤에 필요한 압력을 나타냄. FMEP × 배기량 = 마찰을 극복하기 위해 1사이클당 필요한 동력. 대부분의 기계적 손실은 피스톤과 실린더 보어 사이의 마찰에서 발생함. 피스톤이 많을수록(V6 vs I4) 마찰도 증가함. 캠축 개수, 밸브 개수, 저널 베어링 개수도 마찰에 영향을 미침.
