Yes it very much peaked fairly early then had a long tail with occasional good stuff. Watching Clarkson and May review the tedious NPC SUVs in the 20th season was one of the last times there seemed to be genuine fun and chemistry going on, and they reviewed those indentikit cars exactly the way they deserved to be and there was some very sharp writing in the observations about how people use them.I think that's the last really good piece I remember from the last couple of years. The Grand Tour felt absolutely wked out from the first episode, even with the lavish production.

After that failed he went back to what he knew best and what the public loved him for. He arguably continued the chat show partially in the new Top Gear, with The Star in a Reasonably Priced Car and The News segments. When he was (correctly) binned by the BBC, it was clear that Top Gear was pretty much finished and Hammond & May knew they had to follow him to the next thing. There s no way they could have carried Top Gear on their own with or without somebody new. Whichever way you cut it, he was more than just a part , unless by that part, you mean 95%. I would agree. I've seem interviews with Willman were he's very clear it was Clarkson who was the driving force.Same reason Clarksons Farm is so successful. Farming shows are hardly new, but he really knows how to make good TV. According to Willman Amazon really didn't want to make it!I think AW is probably being a little modest about his own role in TG, GT and CF. Him and Clarkson seem to be an excellent pairing when it comes to making entertaining television.
