I've got my Phaeton with the 6HP to do soon, a bit more involved as a job, but it's already had a box and a torque converter in the last 50k, so it hasn't been left forever without maintenance - I've heard the 6HP19s seem to like to give trouble! It's my first torque converter auto (in 70 cars of manuals, and 1 DSG!)If I'd kept my old E320cdi I'd have certainly ended up getting the gearbox serviced. I bought it with 104k on

The V6 CDi is lovely then with that. Obviously, the 6HP is the only box available in a Phaeton; it never got the 8HP as the later A8s did. I wonder if you could convert it? The DSG is a wet-clutch one; it works very well with the 2.0 TDI motor, giving excellent economy and good engine braking, etc. Different cars, different box. A DSG in the Phaeton would just be wrong, but likewise a slushy box in a sporty car; you can see where manufacturers dropped the ball. I believe the aftermarket scene for transmission swaps is getting bigger as people realise how good *some* autos can be!When I first got the Phaeton, I found how incongruous the mapping of the converter lockup clutch was; it didn't seem to have any rhyme or reason as to when it would decide to lock up. Then I found out that it was 100% mapped for comfort, to deliberately "slip" the converter going up and down to the next gears - to hell with economy; if you wanted economy, you didn't buy a 2300kg steel-bodied luxury saloon. Then it all made sense. The slip of the converter basically means virtually seamless movement, somewhat like a CVT but with a less rigid engine note, and less linear than a manual box. The only reason I can hear the engine at all is that the exhaust is empty of all emissions control gubbins... I think the point of a car like this is to not feel the engine, the road or anything else and just relax and listen to the music on a good stereo and get there with your arse suitably massaged! From owning them, I was a fan of the 7G in our old CLS350cdi, just worked really nicely as a packager but despite being the same gearbox and engine in our ML, it never felt quite as good. Possibly as the engine sounded different in both and felt coarse in the ML where it felt more potent in the CLS

Priced at £5000 less with some stonking finance deals, it should have done better.....but was it just too expensive to build? The big gap between the outgoing cars and the new one is a good idea and possibly intentional to create the biggest possible impact. I think this is going to do very well indeed. I'm looking forward to it, and seeing my first one on the road. If they couldn't build cars well enough to compete with Audi, BMW, and Mercedes or lo

Possibly a strange topic for some, but I’ve always had a fascination with headlamp washers, and in particular systems that involve wipers. I’ve had a couple, namely a Saab 900 and an E30 BMW. Some other manufacturers like Volvo and Mercedes were well known for them tooHowever, this evening I randomly found the following image of a Talbot Solaro, and it got me thinking about what other cars are there where headlight wipers were availableA few others that spring to mind:Any other obscure ones?

The Mk3 Astra and Cavalier are so similar (especially at the front) that only a true car nerd would know or care, but the Saab has an Astra rear beam, clear as day. The GTE's beam would fit right on for example, and the way the handbrake cables work are the same. A Cavalier sort of uses a single cable, Astra/ Saab uses one for each wheel. But then Saab added 5mm spacers each side at the rear, to make it the same as a Cavalier....It's very odd.Well I for one have learnt somethin
