One morning a wee train of a 205 1.6Gti, Mk Golf GTI (I think 16v), XR2 and a Capri laser (cannot remember what engine) set off to do the length of Ullswater from where we lived to our work site. All I remember was 1. giggling the whole way to work in passenger seat of the 205 and 2. three cars arrived together, the Capri a good few hundred metres back. Apparently he could not keep up with the cornering speed of the other three...Now it may be a tyres thing, but I always wondered if it was just st

But nostalgia is a powerful tool so there's bound to be a lot of love. Capri 280 12 grand list in 1986, Supra was 16 for the 3.0 which had just come out, the price differential was always about 30% between a top end Capri and a Supra. It was a class up, competing against the Monza GSE, Starion Turbo and Nissan 300ZX, it was also nearer price wise to a base 944 than the Capri the other way, stretch a bit and you were into a BMW 6 series, there were also various Audi GT coupes, quattro was a lot more expensive. Doesnt sound much but today would be like the difference between a 45 grand car and a 60 grand car.In reality it was more, Toyota didnt discount as there were strict quotas (10% for Japanese cars) so every car went for list pretty much as there was a queue of buyers (partly why you didnt see that many) Ford had 30% of the market back then and could discount Capris with impunity to get them out of the door at month end or to clear stock, most buyers would have had £500 to a £1000 off. My uncle had a Supra 3.0, was clearly a cut above, it had aircon IIRC, so much plusher, back then your Capri 280 money would get you a Celica 2.0GT and a little bit of change, maybe a grand given the Ford discounts vs the limited scope on Toyotas.Need to see cars like this as cultural icons, moving museum exhibits, nobody is considering one vs a modern car, whether a Supra or whatever was better doesnt matter its what you want, I would probably take a Supra Turbo though. Remember a freind of my mums having one in great white whale spec, can remember it purring away one winters evening, the twin exhausts emitting steam that was illuminated by the brake lights, was very impressed, that was a really expensive car.Fair comment. My uncle had a 2.8i Supra on a B reg, 1984, which 21/22 y/o me drove more than he did. He travelled as lot and believed that

To be fair, if more detractors actually test drove stuff properly, there'd be less detractors. But that doesn't generate clicks. PistonTim said: ...
