Way off the mark...I am retired, I use a van as my daily.The word “guess” might give you a clue. I was trying to find an example that I could put into your world so you’d understand the simple economics of price rises. The petrol retailers have stock now that will cost a much higher price to replace. They have to buy that replacement stock from cashflow. All their other costs remain the same or increase too, suck as rents, rates, staff salaries etc. If they retail their current stock at a lower price than they can replace it with at wholesale prices, then they’re going to go bust. Equally, if they have bought at a higher wholesale price and the retail price falls then they are in trouble as they might have to sell at a loss then. They’ll try not to, but the supermarkets will often force their hand by reducing prices more quickly than economics would recommend they should. There is a lot more to it around crude, processing, refining and lead times too. Petrol retailers are usually small business operators, not the actual petrochemical company.
