증상

타이어가 매달 얼마나 공기를 잃는가? 질소로 채운 타이어가 실제로 매달 더 적게 잃는가? 타이어 판매점 매니저에 따르면 타이어는 공기나 질소 모두 매달 약 2 PSI를 잃는다고 한다. 이게 맞는지? 내 차량은 4-5개월 동안 확인하지 않아서 모든 타이어가 약 9 PSI 부족했고, 스페어는 약 20 PSI 부족했다. 이게 일반적이라면 매달 공기를 주입해야 할 것 같다.

처리 내용

타이어 판매점 매니저의 의견이 대체로 맞다. 더 정확하게 표현하면: 일반적인 타이어는 매달 최대 2 PSI를 잃을 수 있다. 이게 왜 중요한가? 각 타이어/휠 조합은 공기압을 잃는 속도가 다르다. 펑크 외에도 타이어가 공기압을 잃는 여러 가지 원인이 있다. 배드 밸브 스템 씰, 밸브 코어 문제, 비드 씰, 또는 손상된 휠 등이 있을 수 있다. 어떤 타이어/휠은 공기를 거의 잃지 않거나 매우 느린 속도로 잃을 수도 있다. 질소 사용에 관해서는, 질소가 산소보다 타이어 고무를 통해 이동할 가능성이 낮다는 것이 알려져 있다. 즉, 장기적으로 타이어 공기압이 더 안정적으로 유지된다는 의미다. 경주용 타이어를 사용하는 전문가들은 질소로 채운 타이어가 온도 변화에 따른 공기압 변화가 더 적다는 것을 빠르게 파악했다. 다만 우리가 숨쉬는 공기는 약 78% 질소와 21% 산소로 이루어져 있다는 점을 기억하자.
