None of my older cars starting from 1977 to around 2005 had a cup holder , only thing I had was stick a bottle or can between my legs and hope I didn't spill it

I wonder why every filling station has a Costa machine (other brands are available)?I find it amazing how many people declare they "need" a coffee from somewhere like that to be able to drive a few miles to work in a morning. How do they think people managed for first 100 years of motoring between 1900 and 2000 when those places didn't exist.Even in the 90s, if you took a hot drink in the car it was carried in a Thermos in the boot and drunk from an enamel cup when stopped in a layby. I remember as a child, my elderly great aunt went one step further in this civilised activity. She used to take boiling water in the thermos and make a fresh brew of tea in a proper teapot on the boot lid. This all was fine until the occasion when she forgot to put the teapot and milk jug back away, and set off from Leigh Delamare services with them sat on the roof!!Another elderly relative, on seeing those coffee machines first arriving in petrol stations said "Coffee is something to be enjoyed slowly sitting outside a Parisian cafe, not drunk whilst driving from a toddler's sippy cup".Even though I'm only middle aged, I still see cupholders as something annoyingly American, and I don't think the one in my car has ever been used to hold a drink! I do carry a water bottle on longer journeys, but that sits in the door pocket.Old man/men shouts at cloud! Times change. I still think it's strange seeing teenagers and manchild like adults needing to chug on a Red Bull/energy drinks.
