That's why BMW's chew up timing chains.I change oil at 8000 miles regardless of recommendation in any diesel. the F-Series BMW diesels we ran over a 10 year period never dropped the oil level at all, which tells you that the oil's diesel content is increasing all the time because any 4 stroke cycle engine will use some lubricating oil over time. 18000 mile service intervals are mental, add into this the practice of giving mileage a 'haircut' to stay within PCP deal limits and it's no surprise that cars are failing. To be honest I had no idea on the service intervals, she only used to do about 4k a year anyway so just serviced it by default. Didn't seem to stop the timing chain from rattling at about 40k miles though! And as you say, despite what BMW say, it's best to service them regularly. I've just bought a 640d which has been serviced yearly in it's later life, I'll be doing it even more frequently. At £500 for an oil service on the X5 40d...I can't afford to do it more frequently! It holds 8.4 litres of oil as well, so that stings a bit at main dealer prices too I reckon. I do understand why folk like to do the oil more frequently though don't get me wrong.
