The more diesel cars were bought and used the lower the demand for petrol went. You can get more diesel from a barrel just because you need less petrol. It's a fixed ratio. So the demand from refineries for petrol fell and that meant the production of diesel also fell. This was easily catered for by importing refined diesel from Russia who were a major producer of legally compliant diesel. Post the invasion of Ukraine that model broke and we had to switch our imports of diesel from Russia to alternate markets such as the U.S. it was more expensive to buy and ship but it solved the supply problem. People banging on about the decline in fuel refining in the U.K. and trying to make out that diesel isn't linked to petrol and that science needs to be broken so more diesel can be refined from a barrel are just doing the bidding of the usual spud controllers. The issue with diesel is due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine followed by the U.S. attack on Iran. And this is an issue for haulage and the cost of goods and services. The issue for consumers in direct regard to diesel pricing is that they bought a diesel car but if this were a decade ago then there would be a genuine problem as most lower income households had been being tax incentivised to use diesel for over a decade by t
