급가속 시 검은 매연이 대량으로 배출됨. 특히 대형 디젤 트럭에서 심함. 버스에서는 상대적으로 덜함. 승용차와 밴은 중간 정도의 심각도 보임.
검은 매연은 과다한 연료-공기 혼합비(과농)로 인한 불완전 연소로 발생함. 주요 원인: 1) 연료 과다 공급 - 엔진 튜닝으로 연소 중 연료량을 증가시킨 경우. 일반적으로 인젝터 고장은 아님 (인젝터는 설정된 양만 분사하며 열려있지 않음). 2) 공기 부족 - 에어 클리너 미정비, 터보차저 성능 저하 등 흡입 시스템 문제. 이들이 결합되면 검은 매연 발생. 대형 디젤 트럭이 가장 심한 이유는 큰 배기량과 강력한 가속력 때문에 고부하 상태에서 이 문제가 더 두드러짐.
