증상
고된 엔진에 높은 점도 오일(제조사 권장보다 높은)을 사용해야 하는지 불확실함. 예를 들어 1989년 오펠 벡트라는 제조사 권장이 5W-30이지만, 엔진이 노후되면 5W-50 같은 높은 점도 오일을 사용해도 되는지 궁금함. 냉간 시동 시 점도는 같지만 작동 온도에서는 높은 점도를 유지할 수 있음.
처리 내용
고마일리지 엔진의 내부 부품이 마모되면서 두꺼운 오일이 새어나갈 가능성이 낮아진다는 이론이 있습니다. 그러나 아직 마모되지 않은 부품들은 두꺼운 오일로 인해 제대로 윤활되지 않을 수 있습니다. 다만 이러한 우려는 멀티그레이드 및 합성유가 없던 과거에 더 큰 문제였습니다. 올바른 방법은 제조사가 권장하는 오일 등급을 계속 사용하되, 1~2주마다 오일량을 점검하는 것입니다. 고마일리지 엔진은 새 엔진보다 오일을 더 소비할 수 있기 때문입니다. 일반적으로 새로운 혼다 엔진은 정기 서비스 사이에 약 1쿼트(약 500ml)의 오일을 소비하고, 매우 오래된 엔진은 2쿼트를 소비할 수 있습니다. 이는 주입된 약 1갤런(약 4리터)의 오일 중 일부입니다.
