They just have. My 2006 e class looks like a normal size car these days. Especially the width of it. Even driving an F10 5 series feels scary on some roads, can’t imagine what the latest 5 is like to drive around the countryside.

Particularly a smallish SUV.This is really what it comes down to.I'm a dad, my daughter is in nursery, and I know a lot of families with 1 or 2 children who get by with small cars. Once you go to 3 children that throws a complication due to child seats; not many cars can take three abreast, so you generally end up with either something wide or something with three rows. So big, by necessity.I want to have plenty of poke and plenty of toys both up front and in my armrest of win. I also need comfy seats and enough space to move about for a 500+ mile road trip. So I have a big car. If they made something X1 sized with a V8 and lots of equipment, then I'd be happy with something smaller and suffer a bit of back pain on the occasional longer journeys. I don't NEED a big car, but a big car has the things I WANT.With the exception of the 7 series, I have noticed that cars which had exceeded the 5m barrier seem to have bounced back and got a bit shorter in the current generation, so I wonder if the largest cars aren't getting bigger, but due to models being available from more mainstream manufacturers there are more people now buying bigger models.There is some merit to the "I'm big so I need a big car" argument; I'm only 6'2", but in a 1 series or A-class it's not possible to have someone sit behind me unless it's a short local journey; I have to pull the seat forward, they have to sit side saddle. It's effectively a 2+2. I know a chap who is 6'8" and drives an A-class, but he can't have anyone behind him, ever. It's a three seater.When I drive a 3/C that second row is definitely usable, with a 5/E it's suitable for adults, and anything beyond is just extra space to luxuriate.
