I think, in general, gaining access to an EV tariff combined with shifting domestic loads to off-peak periods will lower, not raise, the cost of the electricity to run the house. Our weighted average price is 22.2p / kWh with a 47p standing charge - obviously if most of our consumption is in the daytime we'll end up paying more, and if we shift it to off-peak by setting timers on the dishwasher and laundry, we'll pay less.Looking at the last bill, our actual average rate was 18.12p/kWh.Edited by otolith on Monday 7th September 18:51

I think this powertrain is absolutely spot on for the Range Rover. I want effortless power in as close to silence as possible.Agreed. Big waftmobiles with space for big batteries are an excellent use-case for full EV drive trains, almost as much as small town runabouts are.For me, hybrid is probably the right answer, as 50% of my miles are under 50 mile trips (EV), and the rest hundreds of miles (ICE range), with very short trips in the cold daily in the mountains at the other end of the journey. EV for the latter would be lovely, but being stuck on the continent, unable to charge a non-Tesla would be bad. I would need to do more research on charger availability on our regular route. The issue i have with hybrid is that on those high speed miles, your fuel economy is poor as you are lugging all the electric kit that is doing nothing. I get 38mpg on a fast run out of my diesel SUV. The RR six cylinder petrol hybrids seem to get mid to low 20s on a similar run. OK, some of that cost is ameliorated by petrol being cheaper, I admit. Also, and especially with JLR's reliability issues, you have the costs of servicing an ICE vehicle anyway, and greater complexity for breakages as the vehicles get older - and I tend to buy stuff at five years old and run past 10 years. If going hybrid, I would probably go Porsche. Otherwise, the last generation L405 RR hybrids can now be had at a temptingly reasonable price. Before anyone jumps on me for the JLR reliability cliché, I ran a diesel L405 over a full winter, living in the Alps. It was three years old, a lovely place to be, and had constant , minor electronic issues. I am sure there are good ones, but it seems to be a bit of a lottery.Anyway, the biggest large cashflow cost for me is crystallising depreciation and changing vehicle, so here's hoping my diesel Audi truck has a fe

Ouch! That must be a killer for EVs.It’s about 115 EUR per month to tax this; although point of reference the cheapest monthly road tax (excluding exempt classics) for something like a VW UP is 52 EUR a month. I happened to look at M5s a year ago (G-gen) and those will set you back just over 2400 a year in tax. We do have impeccable roads though so swings and roundabouts.

Crazy and brilliant in equally biblical measures.

I've got my Phaeton with the 6HP to do soon, a bit more involved as a job, but it's already had a box and a torque converter in the last 50k, so it hasn't been left forever without maintenance - I've heard the 6HP19s seem to like to give trouble! It's my first torque converter auto (in 70 cars of manuals, and 1 DSG!)If I'd kept my old E320cdi I'd have certainly ended up getting the gearbox serviced. I bought it with 104k on

The Mk3 Astra and Cavalier are so similar (especially at the front) that only a true car nerd would know or care, but the Saab has an Astra rear beam, clear as day. The GTE's beam would fit right on for example, and the way the handbrake cables work are the same. A Cavalier sort of uses a single cable, Astra/ Saab uses one for each wheel. But then Saab added 5mm spacers each side at the rear, to make it the same as a Cavalier....It's very odd.Well I for one have learnt somethin
