For the most part, they've always had the luxury of space for roads, parking etc. Add that to historically low fuel prices and often covering big distances and it's kind of easy to see how you end up gravitating to a big, comfy car. There has never been much incentive to do otherwise. One thing that always strikes me about parts of the US and the middle east for that matter compared to pretty much anywhere in Europe is that the car is often the only way to get around. Everything is built around it. A pharmacy for example might have a large car park (with big spaces) right outside it where we might be looking for roadside parking somewhere within half a mile and then walking. In fact, walking anywhere at all in some of these places is all but impossible,. I remember a weird situation when I stayed in a hotel in Ohio and there were restaurants within eyesight of the hotel but really no practical way at all of walking to them without basically having to use a busy road.
