They still had the Marlboro chevron emblem back then.There are many people 'still living' who used to watch F1 when McLaren first raced in papaya.I am one of them.In fact - incredible as this may be to you - I watched McLarens racing in the papaya livery the year before they used papaya in F1. That was the second year of Can-Am: 1967.The story was that the team manager, Teddy Mayer, was so confident that their forthcoming 1967 car would be fast that he was concerned about backmarkers (the series had many semi-pro drivers in addition to such greats as Stewart, Gurney, Andretti, and Bruce, Denny, and Peter) who would not notice the speedy McLaren about to lap them and would unintentionally either block or even crash into the McLaren. He wanted the McLarens to be painted in the brightest possible colour in order to maximise their visibility in the slower cars' mirrors.Mayer told the Colnbrook factory gofer to go down the road to a nearby paint shop and buy gallons of whatever was the brightest paint that they had. The kid, and probably the paint shop clerk, decided that that was orange. And 59 years later, we still have papaya.
