We simply didn't create a sovereign wealth fund and pretended the money would carry on rolling in. We still tax to 78% so the government can make a tidy income and cut to to say 58%. Which could be invest within the UK.It's away the same with recent governments , no economic understanding or wanting to be pragmatic, pure eco zealots. Swings and roundaboutsScrapping windfall tax early could cost UK £

That's not something that happened overnight.Comparing crude prices with 2008 is interesting, but it's only part of the picture. The oil itself isn't vastly more expensive once you account for the exchange rate. It's everything else in the chain that's changed, along with the fact we simply can't refine enough diesel domestically to meet demand. That's probably the more important question long term. Whatever you think about net zero, having less domestic refining capacity while we're still heavily dependent on diesel for haulage, agriculture and plenty of other essential uses doesn't exactly leave us very resilient when something like this happens. The refineries are private businesses, they aren t state assets. It s the free market. I thought people on here loved the free market and disliked socialists and lefties and <insert your own pejorative>I'm not arguing that the government should own refineries, that's not really my point. My point is about resilience. While we're still heavily dependent on diesel, particularly for haulage and agriculture, being increasingly reliant on imports leaves us more exposed when international supply is disrupted. The refineries being privately owned doesn't change that. You can have a free market and still recognise that domestic energy security matters.

This looks fantastic. I think it's got to a point you'd have to be daft to buy the G90 M5 over this or a top end Taycan. Either pure combustion or pure electric, the PHEVs are just a pointless, overcomplicated middle option

Still as subtle as a brick in your face. Not for me.

Other than a slightly bulky rear end, I think that looks fantastic. 9/10. And it's a saloon, not another bloody SUV - hurrah!
