Those businesses unable to reclaim directly will add it into their operating costs and reduce their taxable profits as a result. Those unable to do that will either drive less, which reduces the tax take to £0 for that non-driven journey, rather than just the increase.Others will simply no longer be able to spend that money elsewhere now, so it will likely the a zero in the additional tax take column there. For example. Someone spends and extra £30 on a tank of petrol due the price increase, they no longer have that £30 to spend on other things that attract VAT. Let s say the government actually sees 50% of it to keep it simple. That s £335m. That equates to drumroll please .. 0.0357% of the annual tax take of £938billion. Or in State Pension terms it covers less than a day of the spending on that. Give me a figure of how many business miles are driven say for 2025 as its a full year, so a proportion of those will claim back the VAT, and how much tax was claimed back.Also links to all of the above please.
