증상

처리 내용
오버보어는 실린더 벽을 깨끗하게 정리하여 피스톤 링이 밀폐되도록 하는 작업입니다. 노후 엔진의 경우 실린더 벽에 흠집이 생기는데, 보어 및 호닝 작업 후에는 실린더가 새것처럼 정리됩니다. 호닝 작업으로 인한 크로스 해칭(cross hatching) 패턴이 생기며, 이는 피스톤 링이 break-in 과정에서 "착좌"(seat)하도록 돕습니다. 착좌란 링이 실린더 벽에 밀착되어 압축을 유지하고 오일이 연소실로 유입되는 것을 방지하는 의미입니다. 오버보어의 또 다른 목적은 실린더가 완전히 원형인지 확인하는 것입니다. 이를 위해 숍은 보어 및 호닝 중에 데크에 부착하는 토크 플레이트(torque plate)를 사용해야 합니다. 이는 작업 중 헤드가 블록에 부착된 상태를 시뮬레이션하여, 실제 엔진 조립 후에도 정확한 형상을 유지하도록 합니다. 오버보어 시 압축비가 높아지므로 새로운 오버사이즈 피스톤(예: +0.020", +0.030")을 사용해야 하며, 기존 피스톤 사용은 불가능합니다. 과도한 오버보어의 단점으로는 실린더 벽 두께 감소로 인한 강도 저하, 냉각 불균형 발생 가능성, 지나친 압축비 상승으로 인한 노킹(knocking) 위험 등이 있습니다.
