The more you look into the history of BL the more astonishing it is that it managed to survive as long as it did. It is a history of constant underinvestment and shooting themselves in the foot anytime they got near to a success. The morris minor was a success. It sold well but was in need of replacement by the end of the sixties. Fast approaching was a likely entry into the EEC with the opportunity to export to Europe and the double edged sword of imports eroding home sales. So a new car was doubly justified that would be miles ahead of the minor. No, let’s re-body it and call it a Marina.

So a new car was doubly justified that would be miles ahead of the minor. No, let’s re-body it and call it a Marina. And when the selected motoring journalists were flown out to see / road test it they all decided it was underdeveloped rubbish, the management still pushed ahead and launched it anyway as it was just a stop-gap. Why bother? Perfect opportunity to take a step forward but no. The Marina was never intended to be for the EEC market. That was the Allegro (of which more could be said). The Allegro was the technically and stylistically advanced car supposed to match European tastes. The Marina was the steak-and-kidney-pudding car that would finally give BL the direct Cortina rival that it had long known it needed but which Issigonis had refused to design because he didn't like those sorts of cars (vis: appalling management again). The Marina wasn't a rebodied Minor. The terrible thing - and symptomatic of how completely inept BMC/BL was in that period - was that it would have been a significantly better car if it had been. Even in 1970 the Minor was, dynamically, on a par with the likes of the Ford Escort and Vauxhall Viva. Keep the platform, update the gearbox to all-synchro, go to 1100/1300 engines, put some telescopic dampers on each corner and drop a coke-bottle body over the top and it would have been fine. And cheap. The Marina was entirely new platform, the only carryover from the Minor being its front suspension. Which BL managed to completely cack up. They also found that the Minor front suspension tooling was worn out, so at great expense re-tooled to build a suspension system from the 1940s because no one had the idea or nerve to say "hang on lads, we're only using the Minor fr
