Why do cars of this tech level and purchase price continue to use open diffs? Surely the on and off road capability would be enhanced just with passive helical diffs?

Surely the on and off road capability would be enhanced just with passive helical diffs?Traditionally, I understand JLR haven't used Torsen axle diffs because, like an open diff, they can't feed power to a planted wheel if the other is airborne, but this can be overcome with TC braking the spinning wheel. I imagine they feel a passive helical LSD isn't necessary for mainstream models because, to be blunt, few customers would notice the difference, but I dare say most PH'rs would; the age-old cost-benefit analysis in action.Edit: Perhaps JLR should offer a Torsen rear diff as part of a performance pack option on the RR Sport? An interesting point of difference between this and a FFRR.Edited by mjspencer348 on Wednesday 30th September 06:58 Fitting an LSD inside an electric motor is also challenging from a packaging perspective and would be a huge compromise on motor size amongst other things whilst offering little real world benefit. There’s some very clever and effective brake traction control algorithms that achieve what an LSD does in off road conditions where you’d need it.

This looks fantastic. I think it's got to a point you'd have to be daft to buy the G90 M5 over this or a top end Taycan. Either pure combustion or pure electric, the PHEVs are just a pointless, overcomplicated middle option

Still as subtle as a brick in your face. Not for me.

Other than a slightly bulky rear end, I think that looks fantastic. 9/10. And it's a saloon, not another bloody SUV - hurrah!
