They are driving a vehicle which is heavy, has no crash protection, and has poor brakes by comparison with say a 7.5 ton truck. While that is legal, it gives the driver a high duty to drive carefully. Why am I bothered? The other day I was forced to drive up a kerb to avoid being hit head on by such a vehicle who driver neither slowed not showed any sign of using the verge on his side as he barrelled towards me at 30mph in the aforementioned 20mph limit. Happily, although there were pedestrians around, I had already passed them so not in danger. I can only assume tractor driver was drunk, drugged, or on the phone. It is the first time I have ever wished I had a dash cam.I m a farmer and I feel your pain. There are too many young tractor drivers who don t drive at an appropriate speed. There are limits for weight, type and the size of load but most are covered by the DVLA Category F that everyone gets with the car test pass. Many modern tractors are capable of 30mph and some are capable of 40mph. Most doing over 25mph will have dual line air brakes to HGV spec but not all and most older trailers and implements will only have smaller drums and single line hydraulic brakes with a lower braking efficiency and are slower to deploy. Add these to a width of around 2.5 metres+ and you ve got a serious hazard on narrow roads and built up areas. I can see further regulation of agricultural vehicles in the future. Even driver train
