RPM에 따른 출력이란 무엇인가? Car 1이 더 낮은 RPM에서 더 높은 출력을 가지면 Car 2보다 나은가? 그렇지 않을 수도 있다. RPM은 출력 비교에 영향을 주지 않을 수도 있다. 요점: 최대 출력이 도달하는 RPM은 엔진이 다양한 용도에 얼마나 사용 가능한지에 영향을 미친다. '최대 출력' 수치는 엔진의 출력 대역에서 단 하나의 지점일 뿐이다. 이상적으로는 전체 곡선(및 주변 공기 온도, 고도, 습도 등의 영향)을 알아야 한다. 이 도표에서 두 엔진의 마력과 토크 곡선을 볼 수 있다(토크는 실선, 마력은 점선). 토크는 엔진이 차축을 통해 바퀴와 타이어에 작용하는 힘이며, 이것이 자동차를 앞으로 가속시킨다. 특정 RPM에서 엔진의 토크를 알면, 그 RPM에서의 마력을 계산할 수 있다: 마력 = (토크 × RPM) / 5252 위의 공식은 구식 영국식 단위에만 적용된다. 다른 단위를 사용한다면 적절한 변환 계수를 삽입하면 된다.
