엔진을 끄고 오일 게이지로 확인하면 풀 마크를 넘어 있고, 5시간 정도 식힌 후에는 풀 마크 아래로 내려감. 마지막 오일 교환 이후부터 시작됨.
온도 변화에 따른 오일의 팽창과 수축이 원인임. 과거 주유소에서는 주유할 때 오일을 점검하는 것이 표준 관행이었으며, 현재도 셀프주유소에서 권장됨. 올바른 방법은 주유 정차 시 마지막에 오일을 점검하되, 오일이 크랭크케이스 바닥으로 내려올 충분한 시간을 주되 식어서 수축하기 전에 점검하는 것임. 따라서 엔진 종료 직후가 아닌 몇 시간 냉각 전의 시점에서 점검하는 것이 정확한 오일량 판단에 가장 적합함.
