It's not what the content is about. If you take, say, coverage around something like the latest multi-£100k resto mod, it's simply impossible to find proper analysis.Even hacks like Henry Catchpole who generally has a good rep simply will not stick their necks out. His recent "reviews" of the Theon Design and Paul Stephens 911 restomods were pure advertorial in character. Which isn't to say that no skill went into them or that anyone could do them. You'd still need to know your stuff to produce that content. But there was absolutely no attempt at true critical analysis. He wouldn't dare. I was subcribed to the Intercooler thing, but when I read that Theon review, I gave up, it was too awful.Partly, there is some good reason for that. So much is subjective, in this modern age of social media and total scrutiny, playing it safe as opposed to risking a massive backlash is always going to be hard to resist. Who wants to be the only hack saying a Singer is a silly overrated thing? That's a lonely place to be when everyone else is sticking to the same narrative.Moreover, for the most part people want to read about how amazing something is and tend to get very cross if you point out that the cars are made for wealthy fashion victims. The content is about feeling good about things.Then there's the problem with access. Soft balling cars helps keep the access coming. There are so many outlets out there who will stick to the everything is amazing narrative, if you start telling it like it is then you're not going to be given the cars to drive. Nobody will admit that publically, indeed few 'journalists' would admit that
